Imagine, if you will, a moderately curvy fat woman of average inseam length sitting at her desk, pausing in her professional tasks to peer out the window and idly muse, “I wonder if Lane Bryant has the right fit straight leg jeans in stores yet?” Then imagine this fat woman calling her local LB and discovering that YES, Right Fit straight leg jeans ARE in stores, or at least average-length, Right Fit Reds are in one particular store, and then imagine this woman squealing in a fairly uncharacteristic way and waving her arms around like a Muppet and then grabbing her pursing and running out the office door, barely slowing down to tell her coworkers, “I’mgoingoutotlunchnowandmaybesomeshoppingI’llbebackbye!!!” and you will have imagined me at about 12:30 this afternoon.
I’ve been waiting for this moment since Colleen first announced the immanent arrival of LBRFSL jeans. I’m currently unhappy with my jeans array (I have three pairs, each of which is wrong in some small yet fundamental way) and straight leg jeans offer a very appealing middle path between boot cuts and skinny jeans. Although I could have ordered the jeans on-line, I suffer from extreme size-chart cynicism and decided to grit my teeth wait until I could try on the range of sizes necessary to figure out which pair worked for me.
That turned out to be a pretty wise move. LB’s Right Fit size calculator recommended Red 6. I normally wear an 18/20 (I am, in fact, wearing a pair of size 20 non-Right Fit LB pants right now, and they are a little big) so 6 seemed large to me. Having now tried on LBRFSL jeans from a 3 to a 6, I can confidently say that the size calculator is smoking a special kind of size-distorting crack. I ended up buying the jeans in a size 5, which someone younger and trendier than I am might feel were too big on me, but the 4, while comfortable, just fit too… sleek. Yes, these are probably going to loosen up with some wear, but I own a belt and I’m not afraid to wear it, plus I was edging a little close to camel toe territory with the 4s.
I basically agree with everything Colleen had to say about the waist band and the detailing and the cuff and the fit. I’m particularly pleased with the waist band, and with the rise. These are, thank Maude, NOT low rise, which I am like so way over from a basic comfort standpoint, I can’t even tell you. I didn’t notice any stinky dye smell, but I never noticed such a smell before, either, so I’m probably not the one to ask about that.
ETA: I just smelled the jeans after showing them to my coworker, and they do smell like something, but whatever it is, I think it smells kind of good. Chalk it up to that brief but unfortunately inhalant phase I went through in the mid-90s.
I did end up buying two pairs – one blue, and one black. The store was offering a buy one, get one half off deal, which made the price a little more palatable (I do disagree a little with Colleen that $54 is a fair price for these jeans because I just don’t think the denim is all that great, and also because I’m a cheapass Yankee). I had always intended to purchase two pairs (pro tip: if you do not share a dwelling space with your own washer and dryer, having two pairs of working jeans can save you some drama and stress and public shame) but was skeptical about black jeans generally, and find “whiskering” to be vulgar in a way I have trouble really articulating. Once I tried on the black pair, though, I was pleasantly surprised at both the fit and the look of the jeans.
So, in summary: don’t trust the size calculator, comfortable, attractive, not vulgar, potentially on sale, and just in time for casual Friday.

If you had waited like THREE DAYS, I could’ve given you a COUPON.
But I’m glad you like your new jeans!

DOH. If you had told me you could have given me a coupon, I could have waited three days!!!! I guess you probably can’t leak that kind of info, though.

You sound like you’re built like me, and I had the same dilemna with the 4 vs 5 in the Right Fit jeans. I bought a 5 the first time around, but found that they got really loose and baggy in the rear end. So I went back and got a 4. When I first put them on , they are tighter than what I would consider ideal, but they loosen up a lot within an hour or so. Good luck, and I hope you enjoy them!

Yeah, I’m afraid that saggy-butt thing is going to happen to me, too. It was a calculated risk. I will try to remember to update after I wear them tomorrow.

Well, it’s just the usual coupon that came with my last order. Standard $50 off $150 thing. Are they at least doing the buy 1, get one 50% off sale in store? Do they have the new trouser jeans?

I saw something hanging up that was labeled a “trouser jean,” so I will tentatively answer yes, with the caveat that maybe it is not the trouser jean you were looking for.

Now I’m wondering if Catherine’s is going to update their Right Fit jeans. The ones I tried on before fit great in the waist, hips and thighs…and was skin-tight all the way down my calf. I swear, they were like JODHPURS.

You know, that is kind of how the 4s fit in the calf, too. Like, the knees were baggy because there was no drape in the calf. Just cling.

We are. We’re getting the new ones in now- or, starting to, in our store. (Catherine’s sales associate here.)

Thanks ;) I can buy bras and some tops at LB, but I’m too big for most of their bottoms. Catherine’s and Casual Male are the only local brick-and-mortar stores where I can buy bottoms right now.
(Not that a lot at CM fits, but in an emergency, their drawstring pants can work for me — I get them to fit my hips, and the drawstring makes them fit my waist.)

For the record, Right Fit isn’t exclusive to LB. As far as I’ve understood, it’s manufactured by the parent company, Charming Shoppes.

Ooh, hey, they have flare leg jeans! I look so good in flared pants. I see that I’d have to order them online though because the store doesn’t carry above a 7 in any color. If I’m going to do that and pay that much, I might as well fight with the JMS online store. Plus I know JMS jeans still fit me. Too bad Wal-Mart pulled their selection of JMS jeans in favor of their sh*tty house brand.

argh, carry above a 5 rather, I wear a 7. I don’t brain good today.

The LB store near me (on Wabash in Chicago) was offering up to a seven in the store.

Yeah, that is a seriously fucked up size recommendation for you, since I’m shaped differently but generally 1 size smaller than you, and I’m a solid Red 3. Granted, the 3′s fit me… sleekly. And I haven’t tried the straight legs yet, so they might not work. But still.

I’m a bit too small for LB, but the Fashion Bug (which also sells plus sizes, btw) sells those jeans in straight sizes too, and I have to say they are the womesn’s fashion equivelant to sliced bread! The right fit jean is a GODSEND!
I own 4 pairs of Right fit Blue petite jeans, two in size 6 (about a size 10/12–seriously though, what is up with this non-standard vanity sizing?!) And two in a size 8 (14/16)
The fit is perfect, no gap in the waist (which is an all too common complaint of mine: my waist is seriously 8-10 inches smaller than my hips), not tight in the thigh and just the right length. I am full of squee for these jeans and their makers!

I love the usage of “…sleekly.” I can’t decide if it’s code for “too tight like hipster jeans” or “so tight I was showing off my religion,” not that there’s a heckuva lotta difference there.
I’m sorta “meh” about the Right Fits, generally (and not just because I’ve managed to somehow snag two pairs that perpetually smell like the bottom of a garage). They stretch out so fast that I can never seem to get a pair that’s comfortable for more than a couple hours at a time. Sadly, for me, Old Navy jeans still are the best fit. Boo.

I’m on the other end of things, I always have to go up a size from what the chart suggest to accomodate my tummy :( I do enjoy the Right Fits though :) my Catherine’s is good about keeping the much larger sizes in stock in a variety of colors.
I haven’t gotten any of the jeans yet, just the dress slacks for work…I just hate paying so much money for them!! They don’t use THAT much more fabric then the smaller sizes…why am I paying triple the price for them??

I like the Right Fit Blues…omg, fits waist AND hips, at once? but want to slap whoever thought it was a cute idea to put rivet-button back pocket flaps on jeans of women whose butt sticks out. That damned rivet catches and scrapes on everything, and I’m going to have to take the sucker off and sew the buttonhole shut; I already sewed the flaps down.

I noticed her locally the Lane Bryant store did not have any of the New Straight Leg Jeans in “Yellow”. I was told Red 4 is the same as Yellow 5.
What I can’t understand is they the increase in price? They were spendy before and the quality is not as good as the old style.
Anyway been wearing them about week or so (4-5 days) and they have loosened up. Almost got the 3 Red, guess I should have.
But all of the Right Fit seem to loosen up on 2nd wear unless I wash them. Not a bad thing. Still fit better than what I used to wear.

Nordstrom Rack (Discount Part of Nordstrom) has them 1/2 price sometimes.
